Earth Day & Arbor Day

Your scented lilac is alive, just asleep.   Soak the roots in a bucket with clean water for three to six hours.  You can store your sapling for up to five days.  If you can’t get it planted within five days, keep it mulched, damp and in a shaded location.
A little about lilacs before planting…
Lilacs originated in far Eastern Europe.  As early as the late 1600’s settlers coming to North America brought them along.  The lilac symbolizes new beginnings and the arrival of Spring.  There are over 20,000 different lilacs cultivated around the world.
In this part of Wisconsin, the soil tends to be quite sandy.  While lilacs grow well once established, it is helpful to amend the soil a bit with some compost.  Lilacs thrive in space that gets at least five hours a day of direct sunlight and a space where it gets adequate air flow so the leaves dry.  Critters usually leave lilacs alone.  That doesn’t mean they won’t try them so it is best to put some protection around your new sapling to keep it safe.
Before you dig…
Make sure you have done your homework on where you can safely plant in your yard!!!!
Getting it planted…
Dig a hole that accommodates the roots both deep enough and wide enough when they are spread out.
Add a couple handfuls of compost into the hole then center the sapling, spread out the roots and make sure the root collar (where the upper most roots grow) is level with the land around the hole. Start refilling the hole with the soil, patting down as you go.  You want to make sure you firmly plant the roots but don’t step on them or over compact the soil.  If you do the roots will have a very difficult time breathing.
If you planted your sapling in a grassed area, remove three feet of grass all the way around your new plant.  Cover with mulch.
After planting make sure you water your new sapling, keeping it moist but not soaked.  Until fully established your tree should get about 1” of water each week.
Do NOT use fertilizer on your sapling.  It will burn the roots.
Each Spring you can enjoy the beautiful aroma of blooming lilac!
Every bloom keeps Green Lake growing!!
